This is one of the hard skinned earth balls which is hypogeous (develops in the earth) and what we see here are the remnants after the exoperidium has split into this typical star shape, and released the spore mass which, in this case, was washed away by the heavy rains experienced in this area during the last few days. Image 2 shows the underside of the fruit body and some of the mycelial threads of the stem are still visible
