This is NOT fungal at all. It is the nitrogen fixing part of the cycads which are so common in our local forests. Jackie can probably give you a better explanation about their function and importance in the environment.

Thanks Teresa, Further research seems to indicate it is the coralloid roots of a cycad (probably a Burrawang)
