If a 'bolete' of some kind I'd be inclined to lean towards a Pulveroboletus species. However it looks like it may be way too large for this genus! Firstly, do you remember roughly what size it was as this may help? Secondly, do you remember what colour the pores were? These are important characteristics to note when trying to identify a fungus. You do set us some good challenges.............!

Firstly, sorry Jackie. I received your comments after I had responded to Pam's and posted the second photo. I promise from this point on I will attempt to be more precise with my postings but I do warn you up front, I have a lot of images posted still waiting to be identified. Oops! Pam, the size was around the bread and butter plate range. Underneath looked quite solid, like a sponge and was roughly the colour of the dark spots.

By the way just an alert to all of you that there will be fungi coming up in the burnt areas that you normally don't see. Please keep an eye out for them and record them if possible. These will largely replace the normal fungal species you see. Then over about a five year period the species will return to the ones prior to the fire. A Laccocephalum hartmannii has been recorded in the Budawang area. Please pass the word around.
