Small thick dark brown fungus with white under the brown cap turning into yellow gills with random red spots and thick reddish brown flecked stalk. The cap was golfball size, the stalk about 3 cms tall. I suspect the green tinge was in response to the cap being damaged.

This is a gilled genus that is related to the 'boletes'. The distinctive characters are those yellow gills and some shade of brown on the cap. Bruising (blueing) is not always as obvious as in your specimen but is also a characteristic to note. Another important characteristic to note is the colour of the basal mycelium (the mycelium at the base of the stipe) which may be white or yellow. In your specimen it is white. This is a mycorrhizal genus so if you can note nearby tree species it helps build a wider understanding of their associations.

The surrounding trees where black wattle, Victorian Christmas Bush (but I've heard others call it a mint bush and it is does have a strong smell) and a few gum trees, mostly Stringy Bark and (I think) Mahogany.
