This is not only the first record of this species for Budawang Coast Nature Map it is also the first record of this genus in the region as well. In addition there is only one other record of this species in ALA in NSW

Growing in some disturbed soil amid leaf litter on the rainforest verge.

Great sighting - you've justed added a new species to the Budawang Coast list of fungal species!! I've added it to the list. A delightful little fungus which because of it's form can easily be confused with Ramaria species.

Thanks for correcting my ID Pam - having just looked it up on ALA - I was surprised to see that there is only a single additional recorded sighting for the whole of NSW, also from earlier this year. Do you think it is really that rare or more likely just misidentified? Cheers

It's obviously not rare for other States, such as Victoria and Tasmania. That may mean that people there are more knowledgeable regarding their fungi or as you say it has been misidentified elsewhere. It's one I've seen around in NSW though not regularly. Interesting the other NSW sighting registered with ALA was on the south coast as well. As you now recognise the species you may keep an eye out for it for future records! Thanks again for capturing and recording this sighting.

It did strike me as interesting that it was growing on disturbed soil on the slope (i think human or animal footsteps had disturbed it), do you know if it is common for the fruiting bodies to be produced in this context?

I have been back to the same site and the fruiting bodies now extend over at least 50m^2 !

Wow, that's great. I've not found anything in the reading of done so far on this species that says anything about it favouring disturbed soil. I have seen this tendency with some Thelephoraceae species.
