HIstorical. I think this is the underside of a very pretty spider. I took the picture for the flower and didn't see the spider at the time.

Kylie - the taxonomy of the orb weaver spiders is not clear and different guides give different treatments - I am confused at the difference (or whether they are in fact the same species) between the Cyclosa fulignata group and Araneus hamiltonii

Thanks Michael. I was surprised how similar underneath this spider was to the St Andrews Cross Spider I had seen on the NSW coast at christmas.
