This she oak had these weird spirals on the top of the tree - this one which was huge (like 10cm) and a much smaller one (4cm). What has caused these? Is this an insect thing or just a weird growth, or is this what the new growth looks like? Never seen anything like it before!

Sorry didn't mean to undo your suggestion. I'm presuming this is some sort of deformity, I'm not convinced it is an insect.

that's fine natureguy. I had a look at the canberra website but no one has photographed something like this. Its put a lot of energy into it which is why the tree looks stunted to me.
