there were 250 on one leaf on one gum tree sapling, and then about 100m away, another leaf on a different gum also had around 250 on it. Never seen these before. Look like flowers. or fungi. But are they some kind of insect 'egg'?

Hi Kylie, I've not seen these before either, but I suspect some sort of gall.

A Google image search suggests the gall Ceroplastes sp.

wow. thanks Alison. I tried the internet and got nothing! :) They were really mauvy purple in colour.

Did you know you can drag an image onto Google to do an image search? On a new page, select Image from the top right-hand corner next to the maps icon.
