User's notes
The sequence of images shows a Craypot Stinkhorn fungus in the process of emerging from its gelatinous egg. In these images the fungus was about half its fully emerged size. (The full-sized fungus is recorded in a separate NatureMapr sighting). The fungus egg was originally found at a location where several of these fungi had recently grown after rainstorms and very humid weather. Unfortunately, the fungus eggs typically appeared late afternoon and whilst growing during the night and early morning, were being completely eaten, presumably by flies, slugs, rodents and the like. To provide this photographic record of the fungus’ development, one egg was relocated to a protected location and allowed to grow in isolation overnight. (The GPS coordinates for this sighting have been adjusted to show the original location where the fungus egg was found).
