why do things go in as "near Amata aperta" or whatever else ???? the species is quite variable why not THE actual species ???

Because other species look like this too and are also variable, so this could be one of those.

Reorienting and rescaling a copy of this photo to match a forewing with those in
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/arct/cten-wings.html
one can see it is a long way from say A. annulata and from A. chlorometis,
but is as close to A. humeralis and A. orphnaea as it it is to A. aperta.
