it is not Athetis tenuis. I have not found an alternative ID yet.

Perhaps not, but it's not surprising why iNaturalist's AI algorithm suggests A. tenuis.

This moth is worn and the forewng tips are damaged here and do not show rounded tips here as would be expected for A. tenuis.
Are these photos of a dead moth?

Thank you for your work. The moth was alive, with wings both spread and together during different times

It does look like the moth in the link you gave, Ian. That moth was IDed by vicfazio3 also. Even so, it does not look like other examples of A. tenuis on iNat I have looked at. Interestingly that moth, and the one above have an extra white tufted dot on the base of the forewing.

Nice ID work Wendy. (WendyEM). On a closer look the second brownish cuneiform marks do match E. bipunctalis, especially the third and fifth images. NB One of my former IDs from Carnarvon Station Qld - a Grammodes species IDed by me and formerly supported by vicfazio3 was recently corrected to an unnamed Grammodes (genus) species based on Bold (Hobern) evidence.

I'm super impressed by the seriousness, detail, and expertise you both (and Don), put into identifying moths - an education for me. Thank you
