I was told it was a Juvenile Striated Heron. I have seen a lot of adults around Townsville.

Its difficult to explain the differences, but if you search up Black Bittern and Striated Heron images, you can probably see the difference. Black Bittern are larger, and typically dark all over (not different shades of black and grey like Striated Herons), and the yellow-white striping on the front is also very distinctive.

I initially thought it was a black, but when I posted it on the Australian Bird Identification Facebook page, they said it was a juvenile Striated Heron.

Interesting. I wouldn't highly recommend ABID (no offence) but I haven't had the best experiences there, and I've also found numerous incorrect ID's on there that I have corrected.
