I know these are awful photos because of backlghting, but on one you can see the red beak of the bird on the right, which is facing the camera. Also heard their cackling call. Only saw them this one time, in the dead tree.

In response to the ID comment received by email (not shown here), the dollarbird is the only bird of this size in Australia with a red beak and that distinctive square tail and which is likely to sit at the top of a dead tree. I think it should be enough for ID. I can ask someone better than me at IT to see if they can bring the colours out in the pic a bit better, if you are still not convinced.

No stress Lyndal, I confirmed the sighting cause I can make out the red beak in the photos as they currently are, the silhoutte of the bird is also indicitive :)
