Pisolithus marmoratus (Horse Dung Fungus)
Variable in size, ovoid, pale at first then becoming shiny dark brown to black, mottled with gold markings. Has a persistent pseudo stem that is buried or partly buried. Spores are enclosed in lighter coloured lense shaped peridioles that are arranged concentrically, becoming smaller and more tightly packed towards the base. These are initially enclosed in a blackish gelatinous tar-like matrix. As the fungus matures it erodes from the top down releasing its spores. This horse dung like fungus is found in litter and open ground, Common in dry and disturbed areas such as gravelly roadsides. It can lift and break though tar as it matures. Mycorrizal in dry sclerophyll woodlands, associated with Eucalyptus species.
