Halictidae (family)

Bees in this family have a short tongue, but on an extendable arm ... when feeding, it appears long and angled in places. The wing venation is important in identification. All Australian Halictidae have a strongly curved basal (or 'M') vein. In the Americas the family is known as Sweat Bees but in Australia only stingless honeybees are commonly reported as being attracted to perspiration. The largest genus in the family is Lasioglossum, known worldwide as Furrow Bees.
