Orthaga thyrisalis and Salma cinerascens are similar looking species. The most prominent dark area on the forewing of fresh specimens of Orthaga thyrisalis is at the base, and for Salma cinerascens it is at the apex. Both species have a light area mid-forewing: in Orthaga thyrisalis it is essentially a transverse band across the middle of the forewing, whereas in Salma cinerascens it is a more a patch extending from the costa diagonally towards the termen.
