Sorry for the lack of clarity, so understand if not identifiable. However, this photo was taken about a metre or more away from the insect, so it was sizable - but not reachable, as on reeds in a creek

I fear you are right. It is hard even to be sure that it is a bee and not a wasp. The difference between the two is not simply the presence or absence of hair, but whether the hairs are branched.
