This species is very similar to Austrolestes leda (Wandering Ringtail). The easiest way to distinguish the two species is to look at the markings on the dorsal side of A2 (the second abdominal segment). In Austrolestes io, A2 it is dark with a pale central shape that looks like a keyhole and only extends 1/3 to 1/2 the way forward from the posterior edge of the segment. In contrast, A.leda has a pale stripe that runs the full length of the segment.
