Thelephora 'palmata group'
The fruitbody is coralloid in form and so consists of a stem from which upright branches grow. The fruitbody may grow to a few centimetres tall and in a well-developed specimen the branches are numerous and densely packed. The fruitbodies are in shades of brown, typically very dark brown (but possibly paler towards the branch tips, which may be whitish). The branches are somewhat flattened in cross-section.
Spore print: brown.
The fruitbodies grow on the ground.
Look-alikes
Some other genera of coralloid fungi have brown species but are of a softer, fleshy texture or have branches with more or less circular cross-sections.
