Dasygnathus sp. (genus) (Rhinoceros beetle)

A bulky brown beetle not uncommon in Canberra gardens in summer. It produces a squeaking sound when threatened. The male has a short, curved horn on the head and a pair of short forward-facing points on the summit of the pronotum.

There are two species in the Canberra region - D. dejeani and D. trituberculatus - which are not always distinguishable in images.
