Grows on rocky areas (sandstone or limestone, often), and distinguished from Haloragis exalata by the wider spaced teeth on the leaf margins and the habitat, which is much drier than that of H. exalata. However, the two could be confused on creek banks running through rocky areas, where H. serra could get taller than its typical 50cm or less height. H. exalata is a mostly coastal species of lake margins and creek banks or forest edges near these.
